I wonder what your advice is on how much experience a lawyer should have before breaking out on their own. Is articling enough, 1 year, 5 years...?
Also, is it possible to get by on legal aid certificates while building the business, or are the certificate rates too low to make a profit, as people keep reporting?

Thanks for the wealth of valuable information presented in this post. I have just come out of my articles and am setting up my own criminal defence practice. Its always useful to hear from people who have been where I am and made it through successfully. Things are slow now, but I hope to have my own "practice in a briefcase" soon.
