After they stopped denying it, warrantless wiretapping was typically justified by the Bush administration as necessary to counter-terrorism.
It was one of those "after 911, everything changed" arguments.
New information published by the Washington Post, however, indicates that the Administration's pressure on telecom companies to facilitate warrantless wiretapping started up to seven months before the WTC bombings.
