Privacy Alert: Facebook to Make Profile Lisitings Available to Search Engines

We've previously discussed the likelihood that current and prospective employerrs, among others, are now utilizing Facebook and other social networking sites to conduct background checks on individuals.

Facebook is about to make that a whole lot easier.

See this notice from Facebook, posted today:

Facebook now enables anyone to search for Facebook users who have public search listings from our Welcome page. In a few weeks we will allow users to make these public search listings visible to search engines like Google. Public Search Listings only include names and profile pictures... No privacy rules are changing; if you do choose to make this public search listing available, anyone who discovers your public search listing must sign up and login to contact you via Facebook.
For those who may affected by this change, it is a good idea to review your privacy settings - and to think about removing those items that are not intended for public view.

UPDATE: CBC also covers this story, here.
