OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced an investigation on Friday into allegations of improper dealings between German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber and former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
Harper will appoint an independent third party to look into allegations that Schreiber, who is fighting extradition to Germany on bribery and fraud charges, has made against Mulroney, who was prime minister from 1984 to 1993.
"The allegations do touch upon Mr. Mulroney's term of office," Harper said, adding that they stem from "nasty litigation" between Schreiber and Mulroney and that he has no proof that they are true.
He said the independent person would advise him on the proper course of action to take in light of the allegations, including whether to launch a full inquiry, which Harper had previously ruled out.
