Does Brian Mulroney truly believe he will succeed in rehabilitating his own tarnished legacy by posthumously swift-boating Pierre Elliott Trudeau?
Press reports on Mulroney's new memoirs suggest he does.
Accusing Trudeau of being a Nazi sympathizer in his youth, Mr. Mulroney now apparently concludes that his own abundant failure in nine years as Prime Minister can be attributed to Mr. Trudeau's unwillingness to be nice to him:
(Trudeau) called me a weakling, he called us cowards, he called the premiers snivelers," Mulroney told Lloyd Robertson, CTV's chief news anchor and senior news editor.
"You name it, it was all there, it was a vicious personal attack.
The Toronto Sun's front page today features photos of Mulroney and Trudeau, and is headlined Clash of the Titans. It should be subtitled "but only in Mr. Mulroney's mind."
Reuters gets it right:
Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, who left office with his popularity at record lows, now accuses late rival Pierre Trudeau of being a bungling coward who failed to oppose the Nazis.
The attack was savage even by the standards of Mulroney, a man well known for his strong language and dislike of Trudeau.
Our view - this is another bellyflop from Brian.
