Wise Law's Employment #LawFact of the Day: Can a temporary layoff be considered a termination of employment?
Temporary layoffs of employment may not be permitted unless there is an employment contract that specifically permits such layoffs.
In most circumstances, legally permitted layoffs can only last:
A. Not more than 13 weeks of layoff in any period of 20 consecutive weeks, or
B. More than 13 weeks in any period of 20 consecutive weeks, but less than 35 weeks of layoff in any period of 52 consecutive weeks if the employer continues benefit payments or makes other substantial payment to the employee during the layoff.
If you have been laid off without contractual authorization, or
If you have not been recalled by your employer within these required timeframes,
You may be entitled to treat the layoff as a termination and to claim compensation for wrongful dismissal.
Seek legal advice to determine your rights and entitlements if you have been laid off.

Ontario Wills and Estates #LawFact of the Day: Intestacy in Ontario
When a person dies without a Will, an intestacy arises
Ontario’s Succession Law Reform Act establishes rules for the distribution of an intestate deceased person’s property.
An intestate person’s spouse inherits the first $200,000 of an Estate.
Estate property over $200,000 is divided between the deceased’s spouse and children, in proportions that depend on the number of surviving children.
Where there are no surviving spouse or children, parents inherit. If there are no surviving parents, siblings will inherit.

20 Years of Wise Law Blog
Time won't permit an epic post, recapping our entire two decades through the law-blawgosphere that was (and could have been), but it's been fun and challenging and busy and a never-ending eye-opener. Glad to say we'll have made it to the twenty year mark tomorrow.
Thanks to all who have been reading and following, and special thanks to Joy and Rachel and all of our lawyers who have contributed over the years.
Happy 20th Blawgversary, Wise Law Blog.
Do you think that means it's about time we got a real job?
