A Reason to Smile

In perfect timing to celebrate my one year anniversary with Wise Law Office, today is World Smile Day. Canada.com reports:

At a time when people share everything online but won't make eye contact on the street, World Smile Day may feel like a bizarre social experiment.

Canadians can judge for themselves over the next 24 hours as the nation's happiest people - prescription-induced or otherwise - make a special effort to turn strangers' frowns upside down. Their quest for kindness celebrates World Smile Day, which marks its ninth year today as a global event recognizing the socially endangered greeting that has "no politics, no geography and no religion."

The World Smile Day Corporation provides a brief explanation and history of the celebratory day:

As is well known by now throughout the world Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.

As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout that world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®

So in celebration, Wise Law Office will be making an extra effort to approach life with a smile for the day. We hope that you have a found a reason to smile too.
